THE PROJECT

Determination shapes the land. It can even reinvent it. With this in mind, since 2005 Sociedade Agrícola Terras da Gama has been shaping Herdade da Fedorenta in Alto Alentejo, in the municipality of Gavião, on the border with Mação: the land of the blue mountains.
Its 160 hectares bring together around 80 plots acquired over the years and transformed into a single, unified estate.
Most of these plots had been abandoned as a result of the region's continuing depopulation and declining agricultural profitability.
The name Herdade da Fedorenta preserves the name of the sulphurous spring on one of the plots. In years gone by, workers from the surrounding fields would come here to collect drinking water for the day in clay pitchers or gourds.
The spring is still there, now restored, and continues to quench the thirst of those who work nearby. Over those 11 years, these 160 hectares were transformed into fertile land, with 11 hectares of vineyards planted, areas of meadow and pasture for sheep grazing, and woodland across the remaining land.
Although modest in scale, there is no recollection in this region of land consolidation of this size. It was hard work, driven by the desire to produce outstanding white and red wines here.
The main grape variety is Touriga Nacional, alongside Aragonez, Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah and others, with Arinto and Antão Vaz for the whites.
